Generali Foundation gives grants

The Margaret M. Generali Foundation this week announced recipients who will split $12,000 worth of educational grants for the current school year.

The foundation has supported local education enrichment for 12 years in memory of Generali, a popular principal who led the school that now bares her name.

Generali spent 27 years teaching in city schools before she died of a brain aneurysm in 1999 at age 48. The school was renamed after her death. Her husband, Ed Generali, and friends started the foundation in her memory, and have so far distri buted $125,000.

This years grantees include:

  • Marie McDermott, “Who I Am Makes a Difference,” North End Middle School
  • Kathy McKeeman, “ICAN, Identifying Countries and Nations,” Barnard School
  • Sean Mosley, “Shakespeare Residency Program,” Wilby High School
  • Maureen Bergin and Karen Sullivan, “Making Home-School Connections,” Bucks Hill School
  • Melissa Boutote, “Raising Student Achievement,” Carrington School
  • Amy Boisvert and Terri Miller, “Study Island,” Margaret M. Generali School
  • Eileen McDonnell and Kathy Delaney, “Soar to Success,” Carrington School
  • Kristen Gwiazdoski, “Learning through Literature,” Carrington School
  • Nancy Betkoski,” Community and Service,” Margaret M. Generali School

A related grant, the Dina Generali Kieper Award, was given to Michele Brittingham of Barnard School for her proposal “KNIT, Kids Need Interests Too!.

Kieper, a cousin of Generali’s, died last year.
